Marsannay, The rising appelation of Côte de Nuits
Côte de Nuits extends from the south at Nuits-Saint-Georges to the north at Chenôve, south of Dijon. The Marsannay appellation is the northernmost of the Côte de Nuits appellations. Until the 1950’s, its wines were very popular but fell into neglect. But the quality of the soil and the hard work of winemakers finally showed the results: today Marsannay has become a very elegant and in vogue wine ! And of course the Château de Marsannay contributes strongly to this renaissance.
A bit of history
In 1936, during the delimitation of AOCs (Registered Designation of Origins), Marsannay did no apply for the appellation, as the wines were selling well. After the war, things changed and wine lovers wanted prestigious appellations. Such as Premiers Crus and Grands Crus. Marsannay wines were abandoned in favour of their more well-known neighbours of Côte de Nuits. In 1987, when Marsannay obtained its AOC, it won back the main markets with rich and tasty wines, worth the best plots of vineyards of the Côte de Nuits.
Recognition coming soon
Today, a classification request for Premier Cru is ongoing at INAO to recognize the 13 finest plots of vineyards. This classification would allow the Château de Marsannay to become the largest Premiers Crus owner of the appellation. Château de Marsannay owns 28 hectares of AOC Marsannay situated in the villages of Chenove in the north, Marsannay in the center and Couchey in the south: Champs Perdrix, Clos du Roy, Les Longeroies, Les Echezots, Les Favières, Clos de Jeu, Les Grandes Vignes, Le Parterre, Le Boivin, Les Grasses Têtes, Les Crais, Au Champ Salomon, Au Ravry and La Plantelle (Hospices de Dijon vineyard).
